Today I'm going to talk about something that you might not know much about: the Greek alphabet. The Greek alphabet is one of the oldest and most influential writing systems in the world. It has been used to write the Greek language since the 8th century BC, and it is the ancestor of many other alphabets, such as Latin, Cyrillic, Coptic, and even our own English alphabet. In this post, I'll show you the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet, their names, their sounds, and some examples of how they are used in modern and ancient Greek.
The 24 letters of the Greek alphabet are:
Α α - Alpha - A - a, as in cat
Β β - Beta - B - v, as in vase
Γ γ - Gamma - G - between y as in yes and g as in go, but with no hard 'g' sound, e.g. weather
Δ δ - Delta - D - th, as in the
Ε ε - Epsilon - E - e, as in very
Ζ ζ - Zeta - Z - z, as in zoo
Η η - Eta - H - ee, as in bee
Θ θ - Theta - TH - th, as in think
Ι ι - Iota - I - ee, as in beer or i, as in sit
Κ κ - Kappa - K - k, as in look
Λ λ - Lambda - L - l, as in love
Μ μ - Mu - M - m, as in money
Ν ν - Nu - N - n, as in night
Ξ ξ - Xi - X - x, as in box
Ο ο - Omicron - O - o, as in box
Π π - Pi - P - p, as in path
Ρ ρ - Rho - R - r, as in road

Χ χ- Chi- H- h, as in house
Ψ ψ- Psi- PS- ps, as in upstairs
Ω ω- Omega- O- like omicron o, as in box
As you can see, some of the letters look familiar to us because they are also used in English. However, some of them have different sounds or names than what we are used to. For example, the letter gamma sounds like a soft g or a y depending on the position and the following letter. The letter rho has a trilled sound like in Spanish or Italian. The letter chi has a guttural sound like in German or Scottish.
The Greek alphabet is not only used for writing the Greek language. It is also widely used for scientific and mathematical symbols and labels. For example:
α is the symbol for alpha particle or angular acceleration.β is the symbol for beta particle or beta coefficient.
γ is the symbol for gamma ray or gamma function.
δ is the symbol for delta function or change.
ε is the symbol for epsilon or error.
θ is the symbol for theta or angle.
π is the symbol for pi or ratio of circumference to diameter of a circle.
σ is the symbol for sigma or sum.
φ is the symbol for phi or golden ratio.
The Greek alphabet is also used to write some other languages that have historical or cultural connections with Greece. For example:
Bactrian: an extinct Indo-European language spoken in ancient Bactria (modern Afghanistan).Coptic: an Afroasiatic language spoken by Egyptian Christians.
The Greek alphabet has a long and rich history that spans thousands of years and continents. It is a fascinating and beautiful writing system that reflects the culture and wisdom of its creators and users. I hope you enjoyed learning about it and maybe even inspired to learn more.
